<p>A liquid crystal display device comprises first and second electrode substrates (AR, CT), a liquid crystal layer (7) held between the electrode substrates (AR, CT) with nematic liquid crystal molecules arranged almost in parallel with the substrates (AR, CT) without twists, first and second optical anisotropic elements (13, 3) disposed on the electrode substrates (AR, CT), respectively, on the opposite sides to the liquid crystal layer (7), first and second half wavelength plates (14, 2) disposed on the optical anisotropic elements (13, 3), respectively, and first and second polarizing plates (15, 1) disposed on the half wavelength plates (14, 2), respectively. The electrode substrate (AR) includes a light-transmitting section (9) that transmits back light from the polarizing plate (15) and a light-reflecting section (8) that reflects ambient light from the polarizing plate (1), and at least one of the optical anisotropic elements (13, 3) has a phase difference in the plane.</p> |
