Linear guide for a carriage (1) comprises a guide rail (2) with a measurement arrangement for determining the position of the carriage relative to the rail. Accordingly the rail has a magnetostrictive, electrically conducting wave-guide (11) along its length with a torsion impulse converter linked to the wave-guide, so that a torsion impulse can be converted to an electrical signal. The carriage has a magnet (10) positioned so that the wave guide is subjected to its magnetic field.
