The cooling channel is defined by the ring support (1) and a cooling channel plate (2). The plate has at least two locally defined flat sections (3,4) with transitional sections (5). At least one flat section is located in a plane, which is inclined relative to a plane containing the ring support. A bore is made within the flat sections after the piston has been cast. The flat sections are formed by indentation of the plate, especially using a pressure die. A closed tube is positioned in the area of a flat section.
