[Also in Division C7] A magnetic chuck 20 holds a workpiece 15 while a tool 10 electrochemically machines a bearing race therein (see Division C7). The chuck is rotated by a shaft (21) (Fig. 3, not shown) and receives a current through a slip ring assembly (28, Fig. 3) which applies this current to a pair of coils 30 located within the chuck. Thereby a magnetic field is generated which passes from one pole of the coils 30, through the chuck's cylindrical housing to parts 32, 33, the workpiece 15, and through parts 35, 36 to the other pole of the coils 30. Parts 37 and 38 are of magnetically insulating material. During the machining, the rotating chuck urges the workpiece against shoes (41, 42) (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) to position the workpiece relative to the tool 10.
