Continuous ion exchange production of fresh - water from sea water

The sea water is filtered in known manner and freed from hardness-forming materials by an ion exchanger and is then fed to anion and cation exchangers for the removal of salts, regeneration of the ion exchange resin taking place in the anion exchanger by treatment with aqs. lye, pref. KOH, and in the cation exchanger by treatment with CO2 under pressure at elevated temperature. Aqs. ammonia can be used instead of KOH and recovered from the resultant NH4CL(NH4)2SO4 by treatment with calcium oxide or hydroxide.
