Gold plating - of chromium surfaces by activation acid treatment plating and heat treatment

Proces of gold plating an article having a chromium surface comprises cathodically treating the chromium surface in an aqs. activating soln. having a temperature of from room temp. to about 120 degrees F for 15 secs, to one minute and at a voltage of 9 V so that metallic oxides on the chromium surface are reduced. The activated chromium surface is rinsed and dipped in an acid soln. having a concn. of about 10% and rinsed in water. The activated chromium surface is plated with gold in a gold plating soln. for 5-10 sec. at a current density of 25-75 A ft-z and the gold plated surface is rinsed and heat treated at 200 degrees F-900 degrees F. for 2 min.-2 hrs. and a gold plate is obtained having a thickness of one to 10 millionths of an inch and which is hard, durable and adherent.
