Layers 1a of sheet material are bonded by feeding therebetween a dry monofilament 8 of adhesive, heating to melt the adhesive and pressing the layers together. The layers can be bonded along their edges and be in either superposed or overlapping relationship. As shown, the layers 1a are passed between belts 13, 14, pressure and heat being supplied by electrodes 3, 4 which are coupled to a radio-frequency heater through terminals 3a, 4a. An adjusting mechanism for regulating the gap between the electrodes 3, 4 comprises two blocks 21, 29 fixedly screwed to a vertical side plate 34 (Fig. 3, not shown). The lower electrode 4 is fixedly screwed to the block 21. The screws 32, 33 each have a threaded portion which engages the electrode 3 and an unthreaded portion which engages the block 29, whereby the electrode 3 is vertically movable. Downward pressure is transmitted to the electrode 3 from a cylinder 36, which acts on a nut 39 pressing on a block 26 attached to the electrode. |
