PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a map information presenting method which facilities the check of a current position or a target position on a map and reduces the cost, and a map information presenting system. SOLUTION: According to the map information presenting method computer systems 3, 4 connected to communication information terminals 1 over a network 2 present map data stored in a database to the communication information terminals 1. The computer systems 3, 4 execute a step of receiving position information from the communication information terminal 1, a step of acquiring from the database index information for determining the position shown on a predetermined map document according to the received position information in the position information receiving step, and a step of transmitting the index information acquired in the index information acquiring step to the communication information terminal 1.
