<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording material for ink jet which is excellent in whiteness and a feel of gloss in appearance and ink absorbing properties and also excellent in the resistance to yellowing, coloring properties of an image and the resistance to weather. <P>SOLUTION: The recording material has a substrate formed by providing a pigment coating layer containing a white pigment and a binder on at least one surface of base paper constituted mainly of pulp and by providing further thereon a resin coat layer containing the white pigment and a thermoplastic resin, and at least one ink receiving layer constituted mainly of inorganic particulates is provided on the resin coat layer of the substrate. The centerline average roughness (Ra1) of the surface of the base paper whereon the pigment coating layer is provided is 2.0 μm or below, while the pigment coating layer contains the white pigment having an average particle size of 0.1-4 μm and has a thickness of 4 μm or above and the centerline average roughness (Ra2) of the surface of this layer is 2.0 μm or below.
