1285328 Friction clutches DAIMLER-BENZ AG 19 April 1971 [8 April 1970] 26353/71 Heading F2C In an hydraulically operated actuating mechanism for two friction clutches 12, 13 wherein an actuating piston 17 for the first clutch 12 forms a cylinder 18 for the actuating piston 19 of the second clutch 13, the piston 17 is divided into two parts 23, 24. The piston 17 slides in a chamber 16 formed in a housing 11. The second part 24 of the piston 17 has a circumferential projection 26 engageable with the first part 23 of the piston. Radial grooves 27 are provided in the projection 26 and the second part 24 is held against rotation relative to the housing 11 by pins 25. When pressure liquid is supplied to the chamber 16 alone both parts 23, 24 of the piston 17 move right to engage the clutch 12 alone and the engaging force is the combined action of both piston parts 23, 24. When pressure liquid is supplied to the chamber 18 alone to engage the clutch 13 the pressure in the chamber 18 is sufficient to overcome the centrifugally induced pressure of the residual liquid in the chamber 16. When pressure liquid is supplied to both chambers 16, 18 to engage both clutches the first part 23 of the piston 17 acts alone to provide the clutch engaging pressure for the first clutch 12. |
