A cosmetic composition for topical application to human skin comprising an effective amount of a hydroxy phenyl alkyl carboxylic acid of general formula (I): wherein n is an integer between 1 and 5; wherein z is OH or O or OR<1>; wherein each R<1 >is independently C1-4 straight or branched chain alkyl, CH2OH or COOH; wherein each R<2 >is independently R<1>, CH2COOH or COOH; and wherein at least are R<2 >is COOH; and wherein each R<3 >is independently -CH2-, CH3 or COOH; and salt and ester derivatives thereof.
