The adjustment device (33) for altering a pre-determined axial position of the tool (1) relative to the tool holder (7) includes a stop (37) for restricting the movement of the tool relative to its holder when it is being removed from the latter. The stop is axially adjustable relative to the tool holder or the mounting (17) for this holder. The adjustment device also includes a compressed air supply device (47) which can be connected to the inner end of the tool locating opening (5) in the tool holder. The pneumatic pressure generated by the compressed air urges the tool against the stop when the tool holder has expanded as a result of heating up. The tool shaft (13) is held in a press seat inside a locating opening in the tool holder. A heating device with a induction coil (15) is used to heat the tool holder in order to insert and/or remove the tool. A mounting is used to hold the holder in an axial position during its thermal expansion.
