Two stage hydrocarbon cracking - for ammonia synthesis

Ammonia is produced by a 2-step cracking of liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons at elevated pressures and 700-850 degrees C on Ni catalysts, with H2 in a 1st endothermic step and O2 in a 2nd autothermic step, conversion of CO with steam to CO2 and H2 then washing out CO2 by CH3OH at -40 degrees C (to avoid ice formation) and N2 washing. Due to low steam addn. normal catalysts can be used.
