PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive optical isolator which has simpler constitution than before by using reflection type polarization. SOLUTION: The polarization dependent type optical isolator can be realized by combining a reflection type polarizer which has different polarization dependency for each place, a Faraday rotating element with a rotational angle of 22.5°, and a total reflecting mirror. In respective different-characteristic parts of the reflection type polarizer, transmission polarization direction is deviated by 45°. One polarizer is needed although two polarizers are necessary before and the Faraday rotating element may be a half as thick as before. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
