A method of controlling an electrical power supply to a motor in an electronic power assist steering system (22 see fig 1), comprises monitoring a steering member position 74, using a sensor (60 see fig 1), a movement velocity of the member 75 and a vehicle speed 77, determining whether the movement is towards an electrical power peak 76, calculating a derivative of the movement rate 79, calculating when a particular power increase related to the peak will start to be needed 80, calculating the amplitude of the power increase 78 and regulating the power supply to include the increase 81. Preferably, the monitored member is a steering rack (40 see fig 1). A signal to be sent to an engine controller may be determined 82 related to the timing and change in power demand. If the member (40) is determined to be moving away from a power peak 84, an alternator field current regulator (30 see fig 1) may be signalled 89 to decrease the field current. The system thus minimises steering system voltage peaks and sags. |
