The body of a sliding plate-valve is made by welding shaped metal plates and consists of a U-shaped member 3, Fig. 3, disposed between plates 4, 5, Fig. 4, each embodying a port 4b, 5b, respectively, so that the resulting U-shaped enclosure has a circular through-passage and a vertical chamber 6 of rectangular section. Concentric tubes 7, 11 are welded between flanges 9 and plates 4, 5 to form annular cooling chambers 13 one around each end of the enclosure; each chamber 13 incorporates a transverse wall 15. Spaced plates 18, Fig. 3, are welded around the body to serve as bracing means and heat dissipating fins. The U-shaped .member 3 is of larger radius than the tubes 7, Fig. 4, so that a recess is formed which receives a hollow annular seatring 20, Fig. 3, filled with cooling water; the ring 20 is provided with a silicone rubber gasket. The lower seat-ring 20 is forced against one of the tubes 7 by wedge plates 28 and adjustable studs 31 that coact with cams 29 on the ring; a further seat-ring cam 32, Fig. 4, co-operates with a wedge 33 in the chamber 6 acted upon by screw-jacks 39 at the base of the valve bonnet 38. The valve plate 40 is hollow with interior baffles and has an operating stem 41 that houses the cooling-water inlet and outlet pipes and is connected by links and levers to a motor or a manual chain-drive. Two dirt traps 50, Fig. 3, are disposed in the bottom of the member 3 and the valve plate and seat ring may be readily removed for inspection and replacement.</p> |
