<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that the desorption of HC from an HC trapping agent is started before a ternary catalyst reaches active temperature after the cold start of an engine in an engine exhaust gas cleaning system using an HC trapping catalyst and, therefore, HC ready to discharge after the starting of the engine can not be cleaned sufficiently. <P>SOLUTION: In an exhaust gas cleaning apparatus wherein a carrier is coated with an HC trapping agent, at least one slit is formed to the upstream part of the carrier so as to traverse the cells of the carrier. Since the slit suppresses the transfer of heat to the interior of the carrier in a downstream direction, a rise in the temperature of the downstream part of the carrier becomes slow and the amount of trapped HC increases. During this period, the rise quantity of the temperature of a catalyst metal becomes large and treatment efficiency is also enhanced at the time of desorption of HC. Further, the exhaust gas penetrating in cells generates turblence at the slit part and the contact chance with the HC trapping agent increases and an HC trapping capacity is enhanced. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
