PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a press-fitting method for press-fitting an elastic bush in an energy saving manner with efficiency, wherein the method facilitates production control by making generally constant the number of times of press-fitting until completion of the press-fitting, and to provide a press-fitting apparatus. SOLUTION: According to the press-fitting method, forward press-fitting by a first force-in head 2 and a backward press-fitting by a second force-in head 3 are alternatively carried out, and a protruding length of the elastic bush 90 protruding from a mounting member 91 is progressively reduced, to thereby press-fit the elastic bush 90 as appropriate. Then, the protruding length is measured by a sensor 6, and a driving length of the force-in heads in the following press-fitting step is determined from the measurement, whereby the force-in heads are driven by the determined length. The press-fitting apparatus 1 is comprised of a pair of the upper and lower force-in heads 2, 3, a head driving unit 4, a bush fixing device, the sensor 6 for measuring the protruding length, and a control section 7 for determining the driving distance of the heads in the following press-fitting operation, from the measured protruding length, and issuing an instruction to the heads.
