The method is for the detection of a fault in a ventilation system and uses motor control (2) which internally contains a large amount of control information and data covering the load (3) for speed regulation of the load, but this data can also be used for identifying a fault in the load system. The motor control generates a predetermined axle torque profile (18) and compares it with a calculated actual axle torque. - If the calculated actual axle torque is outside a detection band, which is applied around the preferred predetermined axle torque, a fault situation is signalled. Such a fault can be the blocking of a filter in front of fans.
