The soil water content measurement technique for irrigation has electrodes (1) made as thin tin dioxide semiconductor sheets connected via welds (3,4) to cables (5) in an electric circuit. The electrodes and cables are protected against chemical attack and aging, and give direct measurement. The water conductivity is determined by suitable frequent measurement, to simplify automated irrigation.
