MELANIN BIOSYNTHESIS INHIBITING COMPOUNDS PURIFIED FROM ANGELICA POLYMORPHA, AND WHITENING COMPOSITIONS CONTAINING THE SAME

PURPOSE: Melanin biosynthesis inhibiting compounds purified from Angelica polymorpha, and whitening compositions containing the same compounds are provided. The compounds can effectively inhibit melanin biosynthesis. CONSTITUTION: Melanin biosynthesis inhibiting compounds represented by the formula 1 or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof are provided, wherein R is hydrogen, CH3OCH3CH3OH, CH3OCH3 or CH3CH3ClOH. The melanin biosynthesis inhibiting compounds of the formula 1 is purified from Angelica polymorpha by (1) extracting Angelica polymorpha with lower alcohol, (2) extracting the lower alcohol extract with chloroform, (3) subjecting the chloroform extract to gel filtration chromatography, and (4) freeze-drying the active fraction obtained from the gel filtration chromatography, wherein the gel filtration chromatography is Sephadex LH-20 gel column chromatography and YMC gel ODS-A column chromatography.
