PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video recording and reproducing apparatus having high dynamic resolution and vertical resolution, and wherein a recorded video image has high compatibility with general-purpose software, even in a system for recording/reproducing a video image of a plurality of channels adopting the interlace system. SOLUTION: The video recording and reproducing apparatus includes: a video signal input means for receiving a video signal of a plurality of channels; an image compression means for compressing an image of the received video signal; a buffer for storing an output signal from the image compression means; a recording signal selecting means for reading a signal of a prescribed channel from the buffer; a recording means for recording an output signal of the recording signal selection means on a recording medium; a reproducing means for reading the signal from the recording medium; an image expansion means for expanding the image of the signal reproduced from the recording medium; a field extract means for extracting one field from each frame of the signal outputted from the image expansion means; an output signal selection means for selecting the output signal from the image expansion means or the output signal from the field extract means; and a display means for displaying the output signal selected by the output signal selection means.
