PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a result of character recognition of high reliability by stably determining with high accuracy the character type of the characters in a document or a form. SOLUTION: This character type determining program comprises a step 201 for creating one or both of a feature value for determining whether the inputted character is a handwritten character or a typed character and a feature value for discriminating the character used for discriminating the character, a step 202 for discriminating the character type on the basis of the created feature value, a step 203 for determining whether the reject is performed or not on the basis of a result of discrimination, a step 204 for determining the character type when the no-reject is determined, steps 205, 206 for performing the discrimination of character corresponding to the handwritten character and the typed character as the determined character type after the no-reject is determined, and steps 207, 208 for performing the discrimination of character corresponding to both of the handwritten character and the typed character after the reject is discriminated.
