PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an EL element in which light, that is emitted by electroluminescence, can be efficiently taken out in the air. SOLUTION: An electroluminescent element has a metal electrode layer, a light-emitting layer in which light can be emitted according to the electroluminescence, and a transparent electrode layer, in this order on a substrate, and the light which is emitted by the above light-emitting layer is emitted from the above transparent electrode layer side. Here, if thickness of the transparent electrode layer 14 is made thinner than a wavelength of the light which is emitted from the light-emitting layer 13, the light, which is emitted by electroluminescence near the transparent electrode layer 14 among the light emitting layer 13, can be directly emitted into the air from the light emitting layer 13, according to effusion of wave optic light.
