PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer for sufficiently reserving a capacity of free areas of a memory when image data by one page from a host computer are to be stored in the memory in the form of intermediate codes. SOLUTION: When the image data are going to be stored in the memory in the form of intermediate codes, whether or not the number of the intermediate codes of a particular kind included in each element of the image data exceeds a prescribed reference or whether or not an expansion time to bit map data predicted from the intermediate codes included in each element exceeds a prescribed permissible time is discriminated, and when the result of discrimination is affirmative, each element is stored to the memory not in a form of the intermediate code but in a compression form of the bit map data.
