PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To develop a reflection type liquid crystal display device used in both of external light and lighting modes which has superior display quality of lightness and its uniformity, etc., while made thin and lightweight. SOLUTION: The reflection type liquid crystal display device has a lighting device (2) on one or more flanks of a reflection type liquid crystal display panel characterized in: having a polarizing layer (15) outside a view-side substrate of a liquid crystal cell, constituted by sandwiching liquid crystal (13) between view-side and rear-side substrates (11, 12) made of transparent substrates having transparent electrodes and having their electrodes opposite each other, across an optical path control layer (13) having a plurality of optical path converting oblique surfaces (A1) having tilt angles 35 to 48°to the reference plane of the substrate; having a polarizing layer (17) outside the back-side substrate across a transparent layer (16) having a lower refractive index than the substrate; and having at least a reflecting layer (18) outside the polarizing layer.
