The invention relates to a method of producing an optical glass precursor in powder form containing nanocrystals. The method of the inventio n comprises subjecting a glass material and an optically active crystalline material to high-energy ball milling to obtain a composite material in powder form comprising particles each containing nanocrystals of the optically active crystalline material uniformly dispersed in a matrix of the glass material, the composite material defining the aforesaid optical glass precursor. Such a method enables the composition of the nanocrystals to be varied independently of th e composition of the glass matrix.
