The method involves burning a rich air-fuel mixture in one cylinder, opening one or more inlet and exhaust valves in a predefined time period and feeding air from the induction tract into the exhaust tract via the charger through the combustion chamber of the cylinder. The controller controls the valves so that a weaker total fuel-air mixture exists in the exhaust system before the catalyser (24).
