PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a brake pad capable of extremely reducing the occurrence of judder during use. SOLUTION: A friction material 2 and a covering layer 3 covering the surface of the friction material 2 are provided on a back plate 1. The covering layer 3 contains a highly hard material of 1-50 vol.% composed of silicon nitride or alumina having an Mohs hardnesses of 8-10. The adopted highly hard material is granular with grain sizes being 5-100μm or fibrous with fiber diameters being 5-50μm and lengths being 0.5-2 mm.
