PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid an increase in the width and longitudinal length of an engine when arranging a continuously variable transmission mechanism and a centrifugal clutch mechanism on a transmission shaft. SOLUTION: The engine 2 comprises the continuously variable transmission mechanism 16 provided outside a crank case 22 in the direction of a crankshaft. The continuously variable transmission mechanism 16 has a V-belt 57 passed on a driving pulley 55 mounted at one end of the crankshaft 28 and on a driven pulley 56 mounted on a transmission shaft 47 parallel to the crankshaft 28. The driving pulley 55 and the driven pulley 56 consist of respective fixed pulley halves 55a, 56a fixed to the crankshaft 28 and the transmission shaft 47 and respective movable pulley halves 55b, 56b arranged slidably in the axial direction. The movable pulley halves 55b, 56b of the driving pulley 55 and the driven pulley 56 are arranged inside and outside, respectively, in the direction of the crankshaft. The centrifugal clutch mechanism 17 is mounted on the transmission shaft 47 adjacent to the inside of the driven pulley 56 in the direction of the crankshaft. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
