PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To sufficiently improve fuel consumption efficiency in a cylinder injection spark ignition internal combustion engine in which, particularly, an intake air system and an exhaust system are arranged in respective two cylinder groups, and a three-way catalytic device and NOX storage reducing catalytic devices having superior purifying performance only in a prescribed temperature range in the respective exhaust systems are arranged. SOLUTION: When switched to homogenous combustion from stratified combustion for controlling that an exhaust gas temperature at stratified combustion time becomes high, and a temperature of the NOX storage reducing catalytic devices 8a and 8b becomes outside of the prescribed temperature range, the stratified combustion is still performed without increasing a quantity of fuel injection in either one cylinder group of the two cylinder groups 1a and 1b, and is switched to the homogeneous combustion in the other cylinder group. In the homogeneous combustion of the other cylinder group, the fuel injection quantity is increased to compensate for engine output lacking in one cylinder group for obtaining the required engine output.
