PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a color image transmitter in which color retransmission can be carried out when an image is transmitted monochromatically for reasons of color reception capacity on the receiving side. SOLUTION: In a facsimile comprising a general control section 101 of the facsimile, an operating section 102, a display section 103, an RAM 106 for image memory, an ROM 107 for storing programs or data, a communication control section 109 for making a connection with the opposite facsimile, a JPEG encoding section 111 for encoding a transmission color document, a section 112 for encoding a transmission monochromatic document, and a document reading section 115, when the opposite machine declared that it has only the monochromatic receiving capacity, a color document to be transmitted is converted monochromatically and transmitted together with a message that a color document is transmitted monochromatically.
