The furnace possesses two chambers, each fitted with burners in the upper parts of their two end walls which are opposite to each other. The lower part of one of the end walls of each chamber is provided with one or more outlet ducts for exhaust gas. In an embodiment, the exhaust gas is fed by the outlet ducts through preheaters employed to heat gas being fed into the furnace. Increased productivity is combined with reduced fuel consumption and reduced scaling of the surface of the ingots or slabs, e.g. steel ingots; and a uniform temp is obtd along the length of the ingots, which stand upright in the two chambers.
