1,208,822. Terpolymers. BEXFORD Ltd. 24 Feb., 1969 [25 March, 1968], No. 9715/69. Divided out of 1,208,821. Heading C3P. Terpolymers are formed from units of (1) at least 50% mole of a vinyl chloroacetate or bromoacetate, (2) a comonomer which forms a homopolymer having a glass-rubber transition temperature below 0‹ C. and (3) a comonomer providing carboxyl, hydroxyl, amido or N- substituted or disubstituted amido or tertiary amino groups. Comonomer (2) is preferably alkyl acrylate or methacrylate, polyalkylene oxide itaconate or maleate, vinyl alkyl ether, vinyl ester, alkene, alkadiene or alkylstyrene. The terpolymer is formed by polymerizing the three monomers in aqueous dispersion or in solution or by esterifying a suitable polymer containing hydroxyl groups with a chloro- or bromo-acetic acid. In the examples, copolymers of vinyl acetate with ethylene, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate or butyl acrylate are hydrolysed then partially esterified with mono- or di-chloroacetic or bromoacetic acid; terpolymers are formed in aqueous dispersion, initiated by ammonium persulphate-sodium metabisulphiteferric ammonium sulphate, from monomers selected from (1) vinyl chloroacetate, (2) ethyl acrylate, butyl acrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate or 2-ethoxyethyl acrylate, and (3) acrylamide, itaconic acid, N-methylacrylamide, dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, N-(1 : 1-dimethyl-3 oxobutyl) acrylamide, methacrylamide or acrylic acid; and terpolymers are formed in solution in methyl ethyl ketone using benzoyl peroxide or azobisisobutyronitrile from (1) vinyl chloroacetate, (2) vinyl isobutyl ether, di-(polypropropyleneoxy) itaconate or vinyl versatate, and (3) acrylamide, methacrylamide or 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate. |
