The invention relates to components for the production of a covering, in particular for a floor. The components comprise panels (1, 2, 2a) which have coupling elements (3,12, 6, 14) embodied such that two panels (1, 2, 2a) can be joined perpendicular to the common joint (11) and simultaneously parallel to the surface (9) as well as perpendicular to the common surfaces (9) by means of a positive fit. A cord- or rod-like element (18, 22, 32) is arranged between the panels (1, 2, 2a) in a recess (11, 23) and is preferably introduced between the panels by means of a laying aid. Particularly large rooms can be provided with said covering. Novel optical effects can also be achieved when said cord- or rod-like element (18, 22, 32) is visible on the surface (9). The joint (11) also achieves a particularly good protection against moisture and dust.
