PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the suction ability of an ink suction pump while preventing enlargement of the entire apparatus, and to execute an ink suction operation simultaneously with another operation. SOLUTION: The ink jet recording apparatus comprises a capping means having a cap member 13 for sealing a nozzle formed surface of a recording head disposed at a non-printing area, and a negative pressure producing means for sucking to a negative pressure the inside of the cap member 13 in a state with the nozzle formed surface sealed. The negative pressure producing means comprises a pump unit 10 including at least a pump 14, communicating with the inside of the cap member 13, and at least two driving sources 15, 16 for supplying motive power to the pump unit 10 and also to a part to be driven other than the pump unit 10.
