PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for the treatment of an organic halogen compound suitable for the treatment of an organic chlorine compound or other organic halogen compound attached to a polluted material. SOLUTION: Organic halogen compounds or a solvent containing extracted organic halogen compounds are dehalogenated in a reactor in the presence of a catalyst, hydrogen and an alkali to reduce the toxicity of the harmful organic halogen compounds while keeping the activity of the catalyst by reacting the halide ion obtained as a decomposition product of the dehalogenation treatment with the alkali and recovering the ion in the form of a salt.
