PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately identify an authentic paper money and a counterfit paper money by using a UV sensor in a paper money counter in which denominations and authenticity are decided by an identifying and counting part in the process of feeding and conveying paper moneys one by one out of a bundle of paper moneys set within a hopper, authentic paper moneys are discharged to a stacker and, on the other hand, the other reject media are sorted and conveyed to a reject box or the like. SOLUTION: The paper money counter is provided with a hopper 1, a feeding means 2, an identifying and counting part 4 for separately counting and identifying paper moneys, a feeding path 20 equipped with a conveying mechanism 21 for transversely conveying paper moneys fed out of the hopper to the stacker and a control part, and a UV sensor 100 comprising the identifying and counting part is provided with a UV light emitting element 100, two light receiving elements 101 and 102 and optical filters 105 and 106 of different transmission wavelength characteristics respectively located on the light receiving planes of the respective light receiving elements. Then, the optical filter 105 is equipped with characteristics to pass only reflected light fluorescent from s fluorescent print portion on the authentic paper money, and the optical filter 106 is equipped with characteristics to pass only reflected fluorescent light from a fluorescent agent contained in the material of the forged paper money.
