For the most child-specific protection possible in the case of an accident according the invention in a vehicle a control device (<bold>24</highlight>) identifying a child seat (<bold>32++ ) and/or an activated childproof safety lock (</highlight><bold>30</highlight>) is provided which is connected to an airbag system (<bold>2</highlight>) providing side protection in such a way that when the childproof safety lock (<bold>30</highlight>) is activated and/or the child seat (<bold>32</highlight>) is identified the airbag system (<bold>2</highlight>) can be detected.
