An engine speed signal (22) is derived from an internal combustion engine (46) and subjected to Fourier analysis (48) to produce characteristics (50) in the form of first-order Fourier components that are passed along with other engine parameters, e.g. manifold passage pressure (52), to a neuronal network (54) that calculates indicated average pressure. Rotary speed of a crankshaft is scanned via a crankshaft angle to produce a signal for crankshaft speed. The indicated actual engine torque is calculated from the Fourier coefficients.
