An automotive outboard air bag system (<bold>30</highlight>) is provided in which an elongate tubular air bag (<bold>33</highlight>) is inflated to deploy upwardly from the vicinity of a front pillar lower end portion (<bold>18</highlight><italic>a</highlight>), the air bag so inflated to deploy is made to extend along an outer surface (<bold>18</highlight><italic>b</highlight>) of a front pillar (<bold>18</highlight>), and a strap (<bold>35</highlight>) which is shorter than the overall length (L<bold>2</highlight>) of the air bag (<bold>33</highlight>) is allowed to extend from an upper end (<bold>33</highlight><italic>b</highlight>) to a lower end (<bold>33</highlight><italic>a</highlight>) of the air bag (<bold>33</highlight>) so as to face the outer surface (<bold>18</highlight><italic>b</highlight>) of the front pillar (<bold>18</highlight>).
