PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for producing an optical fiber capable of efficiently producing a twisted optical fiber. SOLUTION: In the method and the apparatus for producing the optical fiber, the optical fiber 13b is twisted by rotating the same, when the optical fiber 13b is drawn from an optical fiber preform 11. The optical fiber 13b is brought into contact with the roller surface 24a with an arc concave of a first oscillating roller 24 at a specific pressure, and twisted by oscillating the first oscillating roller 24, while wiring the center of the arc concave as the center of the oscillation. Thereby, the movement of the path line of the optical fiber 13b is reduced, stabilizing the pressure that is provided to the optical fiber 13b by the oscillating roller 24. Thus, the frictional force between the oscillating roller 24 and the optical fiber 13b is maintained to prevent slip, and so the optical fiber can be efficiently twisted by a constant turning force.
