PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain high image quality and a high-speed operation by appropriately cooling an inverter for supplying a power for illumination and an imaging device. SOLUTION: The image reader is provided with a light source 3b for illuminating an original and the inverter 1 for supplying the power to the light source, in the case the reader main body is divided into two areas through a surface vertical to the main scanning direction of a scanning means, the inverter is arranged in the area where a communication means 6 or a power supply means 9 is not arranged, and the cooling means 8 for sucking or discharging the air from the side surface of the apparatus housing where the communicating means and the power supply means are not arranged is disposed near the imaging device (image pickup means).
