The procedure consists of transferring exhaust gases from one cylinder (1) on its exhaust stroke to another cylinder on its inlet stroke through dedicated orifices (4) and a special duct (5). The transfer is carried out when the engine is under partial load by opening the dedicated orifice at an instant close to the opening of the main exhaust port (3) and closing it at an instant near its closure. The distribution of exhaust gases between the main exhaust port and the dedicated orifice can be regulated, and the transferred gases can be thermally insulated and/or reheated.
