PURPOSE:A liquid crystal composition, containing a specific anthraquinone based compound having a low order parameter and having cyan color in response to diversification of display methods. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal composition containing an anthraquinone based compound expressed by formula I [R is H, (substituted) cycloalkyl, (substituted) aryl, aralkyl or tetrahydrofurfuryl]. The above-mentioned compound is produced by a method for reacting, e.g. a compound expressed by formula II with a compound expressed by the formula MCN (M is K, Na, etc.).
