PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly moisture- and water-absorbing fiber exhibiting high swelling properties when wetted by water. SOLUTION: The highly moisture- and water-absorbing fiber comprises a mixture obtained by melt-kneading (A) a water-soluble thermoplastic polyvinyl alcoholic polymer and (B) a polyamide-based resin, and contains 5-75 wt.% components insoluble in DMSO at 60°C. The component (A) containing 10 mol% ethylene unit, and having 200-500 viscosity-averaged polymerization degree, 90-99.99 mol% saponification degree, 70-99.9 mol% proportion of molecules of center hydroxy groups in hydroxy triads by a triad denotation based on vinyl alcohol units, and 160-230°C melting point contains 0.0003-1 pt.wt. alkali metal ion expressed in terms of sodium.
