During the development of a film (4) passing through a developer bath (1), a fixer bath (2) and a bath for the rinsing liquid (3), it is unavoidable that a film carries silver ions into the bath for the rinsing liquid. The silver ion concentration in the bath for the rinsing liquid is measured e.g. by conductivity using electrodes (4) and (5) and the bath containing the rinsing liquid is exchanged when the concentration of heavy metals exceeds a predetermined value. As a result the developer system can be used in locations without faucets and sewerage for the rinsing liquid. <IMAGE>
