To be able to detect the peak of an analog signal accurately and rapidly, the signal is digitised by fast A/D converter (A/D). The codewords (W) are successively shifted through a dual register (DR) at the rate of digitisation. A comparison device (VE) in each case compares the first and the last codeword (W) stored in the dual register (DR) and determines the sign of the value difference.
