METHOD FOR THE PRODUCTION OF FUNCTIONALIZED SYNDIOTACTIC POLYSTYRENES

A method for the production of functionalized syndiotactic polystyrenes having a degree of functionalization of between 0.1 and 5 wt.- % using particulate syndiotactic styrene homopolymers and copolymers (sPs) as a polymer skeleton and organic peroxides as radical formers by means of solid phase graft polymerization of functional monomers containing carboxyl, acid anhydride or epoxy groups, optionally as a mixture with a co-monomer free of functional groups, particularly styrene, maintaining a dry fluid phase at reaction temperatures of between 125 and 200 DEG C. Preferably, the functionalized syndiotactic polystyrenes are suitable for use as compatibilizers in sPS containing polymer blends and composites and as adhesive coating material on various surfaces.
