PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a paper-bulking agent giving enough bulkiness to paper, without damaging sizing properties of a sizing agent. SOLUTION: The paper-bulking agent comprises an ester compound of a higher alcohol and an aliphatic polyvalent carboxylic acid having one or more hydroxy groups in its molecule. Tartaric acid, citric acid or malic acid is preferably used as the aliphatic polyvalent carboxylic acid. Thus, the paper-bulking agent itself has the sizing properties, and moreover gives high bulkiness to the paper, without damaging a sizing effect of an alkylketene dimmer-based sizing agent.
